Recap: Striking a Balance with Youth Voice on 6/22!

July 25, 2023

On June 22, 2023, MENTOR Independence Region convened a Networking and Dialogue session that focused on the important topic of “Striking a Balance: Youth Voice and Program Efficacy.” The event aimed to explore the significance of what youth voice really is – the expressions of all youth at any time through all means for any reason. This broad definition of youth voice is often in conflict with what we see and hear as adults in youth programming. How do we, as organizations, hear all of these expressions and how do we balance programming with the needs young people are expressing?

MENTOR Independence Region welcomed participants into our new space at 100 North 20th Street for an informal conversation on these topics that was inclusive and engaging. Many perspectives were shared by participants, which included mentors, program coordinators, educators, and youth advocates, all passionate about empowering young individuals and improving mentoring initiatives. The dialogue delved into the importance of elevating youth voices within mentoring programs. Speakers shared success stories and practical approaches for effectively integrating youth input into decision-making processes.

Additionally, participants explored strategies to strike a balance between incorporating youth perspectives and maintaining program efficacy. They discussed how to address potential challenges, such as adapting program structures to accommodate diverse ideas while staying aligned with program goals and intended outcomes.
Throughout the networking session, attendees had the opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals, fostering valuable collaborations and sharing best practices. The event promoted a sense of community and solidarity among mentoring practitioners and youth advocates in the region.

The session concluded with a renewed commitment to youth-centrism in mentoring practices. Participants left with fresh insights, actionable ideas, and strengthened connections, eager to apply these principles to their respective mentoring programs.

Thanks to all who attended this essential platform for advocating youth empowerment and fostering impactful mentoring relationships that consider and celebrate the unique perspectives of young people!
